Emmanuel Villaume returns to Metropolitan Opera for Manon

Next month finds Emmanuel Villaume back on the podium of the Metropolitan Opera for Massenet’s Manon. Returning to Laurent Pelly’s sumptuous production, the French conductor leads a cast that stars Diana Damrau in the title role, Vittorio Grigolo as Des Grieux, and Russell Braun and Michael Todd Simpson in alternation as Lescaut. Performances take place March 9, 12, 17, 21, 25, and 28.

A noted interpreter of both Manon and Massenet’s general oeuvre, Emmanuel earned acclaim for his work with this production when it was heard last year at the Royal Opera House. Of that run, The Independent wrote, “Conductor Emmanuel Villaume makes the strongest possible case for regarding Massenet as a master-orchestrator.” The Financial Times added, “The best thing about this show is the conducting. Emmanuel Villaume maintains spruce tempi while illuminating the opera’s soft, sensuous core.”
